Many of us who are exploring Eastern contemplative practices - with emphasis on acceptance and wisdom - are coming out of western traditions of political activism and religious faith which are based on protest and prophecy. Is it possible - both in practice and in our creative or political work - to hold both approaches in such a way that each informs and inspires the other? John will discuss his work as a filmmaker, teacher, and meditation practitioner to explore this crucial question.

John Ankele, B.A., M.Div.: John's work has been broadcast nationally on PBS and ABC-TV and has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), the Smithsonian, the United Nations Film Festival and the Margaret Mead Film Festival. He started out as Program Director for the NYC Council of Churches, doing public affairs programs for WABC radio, WNBC-TV, and WCBS-TV. He then spent six years teaching at the Communications Center of the All-Africa Conference of Churches in Nairobi, Kenya. Back in the U.S., he developed curriculum videos for schools and institutions and promotional videos for nonprofit organizations. Lately, he has led workshops exploring "the common ground between contemplative practice and the experience of visual perception, from the point of view of both filmmaker and watcher.”

John is also a long-time meditation teacher in the Shambhala Tradition.
